The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
