Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
