The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 thy robes purify 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
