a good many of olden times, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
