Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 enter My Paradise! 30
