The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
