The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
