We sent Moses to the Pharaoh and his nobles with Our miracles and he said, "I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Universe". 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 And not an Ayah (sign, etc.) We showed them but it was greater than its fellow, and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn [from their polytheism to Allah's Religion (Islamic Monotheism)]. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why were bracelets of gold not bestowed upon him? Why did a retinue of angels not accompany him as attendants?” 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 and We made them a thing past, and We appointed them for an example to later folk. 56
