The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 and your third idol al-Manat (whom you considered as God's daughters)? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
