A throng of the ancients 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
