He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 You pay full attention, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 and fearfully, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 laughing and joyous 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
