Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by honoring him and favoring him, he says: 'My Lord, has honored me' 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
