The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And rejects the best, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
