The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise and warn, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 Pollution shun! 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
