The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
