The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
