The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 in which you are now living 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
