We created man out of dry clay, from moulded mud, 26 And the jinn We created before, of intensely hot fire. 27 And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 28 So when I have made him complete and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down making obeisance to him. 29 All the angels prostrated themselves, 30 save Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves. 31 Said He: "O Iblis! What is thy reason for not being among those who have prostrated themselves?" 32 He said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered! 33 Said He: "Go forth, then, from this [angelic state]: for, behold, thou art [henceforth] accursed, 34 "And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)." 35 Said he, 'My Lord, respite me till the day they shall be raised.' 36 Answered He: "Verily, so be it: thou shalt be among those who are granted respite 37 "Till the Day of the time appointed." 38 [Iblis (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. 39 except those of Your servants whom You have singled out for Yourself." 40 Said He: "This is, with Me, a straight way: 41 Over My true servants you will be able to exercise no power, your power will be confined to the erring ones, those who choose to follow you. 42 And surely Hell is the promised place of them all: 43 It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated." 44
