The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 Purify your inner self, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
