A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
