He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 but others will be gloomy 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
