The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
