Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn; 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
