The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 Within gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
