The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
