The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
